Fifth grade at LCS promises to be a year of steady maturation that prepares students for the changes they will face upon entering middle school. Our goal is to prepare students to become competent, responsible and increasingly independent in their roles as life long learners.
Bible
Fifth grade Bible instruction includes a survey of the Old Testament and involves and in-depth study of hte lives of Old Testament characters and the choices made by these characters. This gives students examples by which they can examine their own choices and process of making decisions.
Our reading block includes a wide variety of whole class, partner and small group formats that make guided reading as multilevel as possible. Students are exposed to a wide range of literature, build and refine comprehension strategies, participate in discussions about the books and have one-on-one interviews with the teachers. The focus of our writing instruction is on the writing process (pre-writing, writing, revising and editing). Through activities such as word building, dictionary skills, proofreading skills and writing mechanics, students become increasingly proficient with their spelling.
Math
The fifth grade math program introduces concepts incrementally and incorporates practice of the concepts continually throughout the year. Topics include whole number concepts and computation, estimation, patterns and sequences, fractions, decimals, mixed numbers, percents, integers, ratios, square roots, measurement and unit conversion, perimeter, area, volume, symmetry and real life connections.
Science
Students build upon their knowledge of cells, invertebrates and animal groups. They also examine the relationship of living and non-living parts of the world, the relationship between physical and chemical changes of matter and the kinds and uses of electricity and other energy sources.
